The Nifty Thing About Basil
Basil is my favorite herb. It's delicious and easy to grow, and I look forward to planting a huge pot of it on the patio every summer! However, it is also a plant of dramatic vicissitudes (perhaps that's why I like it so much!). Take a look:
Here is basil after 1 day without water.
Here's the same plant after a good watering. Amazing, no?! (P.S. Warning: One pot of basil was temporarily harmed during this experiment).
Now, I am firmly of the belief that everyone, absolutely everyone, no matter where you live, castle or high-rise apartment, can grow a little bit of food. It might be an old soup can planted with parsley on the window sill, or a few tomatoes sprouting in a muffin tin on the patio. While plants can certainly be temperamental (ask by rsemary plant about its near-death experience!), when it comes right down to it, if you can plunk a seed in some dirt, water it, and give it sun, you can grow a bit of your own food. And I think that this is one of the joys of being a critter- digging in the dirt, engaging with nature, being productive and caring. so let's do it! Let's grow something!
