Greetings from the Prairie

Mama and Papa Mersydotes are the coolest people I know, and here's one more reason why they're awesome: they are restoring a whopping big prairie on their land in Central Illinois through blood, sweat, commitment, grit, and fortitude.  Way to go Mama and Papa!  You guys rock!

Do you remember how I posted about our fabulous prairie planting day last fall?  Lots of different types of wildflowers and native grasses were sewn throughout the field, and a cover crop of oats was also put in.  The oats will quickly grow very tall and will serve as protection and shelter for the more dainty and delicate prairie plants.  Over the next several years, different prairie plants will spring up each growing season until the entire prairie is a vibrant refuge for flora and fauna (including three little rat terrier puppies who love to go and visit!).

Papa Mersy sent these gorgeous pictures along of black-eyed Susans and Turk's cap lilies.

Susan says hi to everyone!  Wonder how she got that black eye? ; )

And look!  The Turk found his cap- won't his wife Lily be happy!

I hope these beautiful and witty prairie flowers brightened your day!
Lots of love,
Mersydotes
