Detour To DC
On our way back from visiting family for Easter, Mr. Mersy, Penny, and I found ourselves riding along the highway, looking out the windows when all of a sudden we spotted the Washington Monument off to our left. Wow!
We had no idea the route home would take us straight through DC! And since we have adventure coursing through our veins, we hopped off the highway and spent a great afternoon exploring the Capital. Even though we made it home at 2 am, it was totally worth it! We saw a lot of monuments that were new and some that we had never seen before when we had visited in our childhood.
For me, the most memorable was the new World War II Memorial. I had no idea it was so vast and so elegant!
Both of our grandfathers served, and we found the memorials to their states.
When the memorial first opened, my grandmother sent a framed photo of my grandfather in his uniform along with a neighbor who was going to visit. That photo is now kept in the Smithsonian with other photos and memorabilia that families brought- it's pretty neat to think about.
We also visited the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. memorial overlooking the lake. It was an amazing experience walking through the sculpted mountains and emerging to see his statue and quotations on the surrounding walls. Really quite emotional as the sun sank over the water.
I had never seen the Korean Memorial before, either. It was also haunting with the statues of soldiers and the amazing engravings of photographs of men and women who served all along the black stone wall.
Being an Illinois girl, one of the historical figures that I really, truly admire and hold in awe is Abraham Lincoln, and it was wonderful to go and see his statue presiding over the Capital.
You get shivers standing in the Memorial, surrounded by his gaze. We FaceTimed Mama and Papa Mersy from the steps and surprised them with where we were! We're all still getting used to the fact that places on the East Coast are so much closer together!
And as we returned to the car, walking on the path opposite the water from the Jefferson Memorial, we stumbled upon a Floral Library. Intriguing!
There wasn't any explanation as to the Floral Library's mission, but the stunning variety of tulips spoke for themselves. So fresh and peaceful smack-dab in the epicenter of the American Government.
I'm so glad that Mr. Mersy has an adventurous spirit- our little side trip turned out to be really spectacular! We were pretty wiped out afterwards, so we let Penny drive the rest of the way home while we napped- thanks Pen!
