Embroidered Photos

On Sunday afternoon, we were poking around the Brooklyn Flea Market with Mr. Mersy's fabulous sister S.  It was very atmospheric to be surrounded by piles of old records, depression era glassware, handmade jewelry, dogs of every shape and size, lots of tattoos, and vendors of small-batch home-brewed maple lemonade while the sky threatened rain and the misty humidity rolled off the East River. At a booth specializing in every kind of old, empty metal tin you can imagine, I stumbled upon a trove of photo postcards "editions d'art" from France: Orleans, Paris, Provence.  They were black and white and nostalgic with "Photo Veritable" written in curlicue letters on the backs.  They were just perfect for a little project I had been wanting to try my hand at for a while.   Have you ever seen embroidered photos?  I love the pop of color on black and white and the idea of combining thread with photo to create something tactile and spiffy.  Also, my creaky bon

Crocheting for the Fall- Yarndale & Wedding

Image
There's been so much crocheting going on over here as of late, but I've shared so little of it on the blog.  I'm not sure why...   But I thought I'd share a few photos of exciting crochet that's in the works for late September and early October. I've already written a little bit about the Yarndale festival that I sent my blue and white mandala to a while back.  I'm very curious to know how they'll all be displayed together- it'll be colorful and fantastic, for sure!  Lucy just posted some photos of all the submissions piled together, and they're kind of fantastic already!  Here's her photo from Attic24- somewhere in there, is my little creation: Participating in something like this crochet festival at first made me a little nervous, not sure why.  But I'm so glad that I did!  Imagine my surprise when, two weeks ago, I was sitting on a beach in Montauk while Mr. Mersy was swimming and Penny was frolicking in the sand, and I opened up

The Mersys go to NYC Honey Week

'Twas a cold and blustery early fall day today, and the wind whipped against us as we boarded a bus for the Rockaways.  We passed through the snarls of southern Queens and finally broke free in Jamaica Bay- I could feel my lungs opening up once the ocean came into view.   The beaches were empty and pristine, the sky and surf were tangled together, rolling over the sand.  I could hardly believe the gulls could take the pelting of the wind and the burning of the whipping sand. And along the beach's edge, there was an amazing gathering- Honey Fest 2014.  Perhaps I am the only person in the world who would interpret Honey Fest this way, but I felt that it was the most incredible form of protest and rebellion against this mega-urban life that is slowly squishing the life out of me.   Can you think of any more elegant way to fight for your life than to care for honey bees, to educate your friends and community, and to celebrate the pure goodness of honey?  All I can say, with

Cops & Cupcakes

Life is so endlessly fascinating.  Sometimes, it is inconceivably strange- other times downright perplexing.  And my awareness of this has never been more acute than it was last Saturday evening.   You see, Saturday evening, Mr. Mersy and I were sitting around our friends' kitchen table, tasting a gorgeous array of the most delightful cupcakes from bakeshops throughout the city.   There were vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, carrot cake, strawberry, and German chocolate ones to nibble.  Our objective was to help our friends find the most delicious cupcake in all of NYC for their upcoming wedding in October- what a delightful treat! After our experiment, I can honestly say that every single cupcake was delicious- no matter what they choose, they can't possibly go wrong!  However, if I had to vote for the one cupcake to rule them all, I would have to choose this vanilla dream of a confection from Sprinkles in Manhattan.  Hands down, the BEST CUPCAKE EVER! So
