Introduction to Crochet: How to Make a Slip Knot

When I first began crocheting, I had no idea what a slip knot was, let alone how to make one.  But every pattern began with a foundation chain, and that needed a slip knot.  Once I got it all figured out, it turned out to be easy-peasy!  If you're curious about how to make a slip knot, here are some step-by-step photos to help out.  Have fun!

Step One: Place your ball of yarn to your left and stretch out the working end of the yarn to your right.  Take the attached end of the yarn and loop it over the open end to create a little circle.

Step Two: Take the attached end of the yarn and tuck it under the little circle you just made.  Now it looks like a pretzel.

Step Three: Insert your hook (or knitting needle)under the bottom strand but on top of the circle.

Step Four: Pull the hook straight up with your right hand, and the loose and attached strand straight down with your leg hand.  This tightens the knot around the hook.

Step Five: Ta-da!  One slip knot ready to go!

Have fun and happy crocheting!
